Chinese measure words can look confusing when you first meet them. In English, we usually say “three books” or “two people” directly. In Chinese, a number often needs a small extra word in the middle.
The basic pattern
The common structure is:
number + measure word + noun
For example:
- 三个人 = three people
- 两本书 = two books
- 一只猫 = one cat
Start with the most useful ones
You do not need to memorize every measure word immediately. Start with a few high-frequency examples:
- 个 for people and many general items
- 本 for books
- 只 for some animals
- 杯 for cups of drinks
Why this matters
Using the right measure word makes your Chinese sound much more natural. Even if you forget a specific one, knowing that a measure word belongs there is already a big step.
Learn the most common patterns first, then add more as you see them in real phrases and sentences.
